CAVALIER PLAYERS HEAD TO NATIONALS

Caledon Cavaliers are proud to be represented this weekend at the NationalPlayoffs in British Columbia. Jacey Murphy (15) and Jessica Evans (16) both will be traveling out West with the
Ontario Under 17 and Under 19 teams. The Cavalier players have received a ton of support
from their home team, players, and coaches. The team has sponsored the girls with cash
towards their fees, as well as a personal donation from coach Todd Russell.
Bell Mobility has also been kind enough to sponsor the girls with a free cell phone for the
week to keep in touch with their family, and of course, update the Cavaliers with how
the tournament is going! Jacey and Jessica are members of both the junior and senior
teams for Caledon and make a huge impact in the level of talent on the field. The Cavaliers
junior team played in the quarter finals last Wednesday August 10th at Fletchers
Fields against The Peterborough Pagans. The score stayed tied 5-5 the entire game, which
forced the teams into sudden death over time. The Pagans scored with a questionable call
by the home referee, which ended the junior season. The girls placed 5th out of 19 teams
in the league. The senior girls head into the semi-finals this weekend in Oakville. Jacey and
Jessica will be missed as this game will either end the Cavalier’s season, or take them into
their very first finals in the Toronto Premiere division. Caledon would like to continue to
thank all the sponsors that support Cavalier Rugby: The Toby Jug, Harris Omer Rebar, Bell
Mobility, Blackhorse Woodworks, and MKD International Inc. Without sponsorship, the
club would not be able to thrive within the community as they continue to grow each season.

Humberview Highschool. Captain Charlene Reidler led a demanding control throughout the game,
leading the team with an opening season home victory against Markham that ended in a score
of 30-14. Jenna Gillespie, director of the Junior squad would like to recognize Jessica Evans for
making the Ontario Under 17 provicial team, and Jacey Murphy for making the Ontario Under 19

Jessica Evans (1), and Nicole Probert scoring 2 trys and winning player of the match. Coach
Todd Russell believes this team has the talent to challenge for the junior championship within
the Toronto rugby league, "With all the talented abilities, we are definitely the team to beat."

Saturday June 4th
Cavalier's First Big Win

The Caledon Cavaliers Women's Rugby club pulled in their first big win of the season this past
Saturday June 4th at the Humberview High school in Bolton. The Cavaliers faced off against the
Ajax Wanderers for the first time this season. Both teams started the game with intensity and
a desire to win which carried over from previous seasons of competing against each other. The
Cavaliers had always been close in talent to the Wanderers, but always fell short in size compared
to the Ajax girls which resulted in the Cavaliers never being able to pull off a win against them.
Saturday began to look very similar as the two teams clashed throughout the first half. The first
Cavalier try came late in the first fourty minutes by newcomer Jessica Evans--a speedy wing from
Philip Pocock High school. Jenna Gillespie kicked for a 2 point conversion to bring the score to a tie.
Caledon used this try as a boost in strength as the forwards and backs worked hard together to carry
that momentum into the second half. By the time Ajax scored their second try to take the lead, the
Cavaliers were ready to answer back, with yet another long run resulting in a second try by Jessica Evans.
The Cavaliers continued to overpower Ajax and bring in their third try with 10 minutes left in the game
by outside centre Liz Wiltshire. The Wanderers tried their hardest to match that final try to tie the game,
but fell short in effort. The final score was 17-12 in favour of Caledon. The Cavaliers now stand with one
win, one loss and one tie going into yet another tought match this Thursday June 9th against the Brampton
Beavers again. The girls play at 7:00pm at the Brampton Rugby Club, community support is encouraged.
"The girls finally came together and played like the team I knew they were. Every single player both on
and off the field created this win. We have a very promising season ahead of us, and I am extremely
excited to see how much more the Cavaliers have to bring." -Coach Todd Russell.

Thursday May 19th
Season Opener Ends in Tie

Saturday May 14th the Caledon Cavaliers women’s rugby club traveled all the way to Belleville
to face off against the Bulldogs rugby club in their season opener in the Toronto Rugby Union
Premier Division. The very young Cavalier team, with a large majority of the players only ever
having played high school level rugby, proved to both coach Todd Russell and the entire division
that they are not going to be easily beaten this year. Within the first 5 minutes of the kickoff,
the Cavalier’s forwards dominated all the way down the field, ending in a quick try by Under 19
Canada player, Jacey Murphy. Both the forwards and the backs played a very strong game,
holding the Bulldogs off numerous times as they attempted to touch down for a try. Late in the
first half, the Bulldogs slipped through the cracks with a lucky kick that ended in a try by their
fullback. The entire second half of the game was a battle by both teams, which left the game at
a tie score of 5-5. This is the first time the Cavaliers have played Belleville and not lost due to
the size and strength of the experienced team. Coach Todd Russell and co-presidents Sara Mezzone
and Elaine Wiltshire were all blown away by the effort put forward by the Cavaliers, “Having almost
no practice as a team, and with so many young players that have never played at senior level, the
Cavaliers showed a huge amount of character and mental strength that will only progress as the
season goes on.” The Cavaliers face off against the Brampton Rugby Club for the first time ever
on Thursday May 19th at Humberview High school in Bolton; kickoff is at 7:00pm.

Friday August 6th
Caledon Rugby Player Makes Provincial Team

It is the dream and goal of most athletes to play at a National level, to represent their province or
country in the sport that they love. The Caledon Cavaliers Rugby team is more then pleased
to congratulate 15-year-old Jacey Murphy of Alliston, who made the Under 17 Ontario team
this summer. Sara Mezzone--President of Caledon Rugby--is proud to have the Club represented
at such a high level of rugby: “Jacey has worked extremely hard all season and is a very
motivated player. Caledon is proud to develop an athlete of this stature.” The Cavalier's head
coach, Todd Russell, presented Jacey with a $300 sponsorship cheque to help congratulate and
support the athlete on her path to even higher National teams. Jacey is a member of the Cavalier's
Under 19 team--a division that challenges her against players with up to 4 years more experience
then her. Coach Todd Russell realizes this player’s natural athleticism and size, something that
will aid in her development into a National player: “Proving her skills at such a young age of 15
and competing against girls many years older has proved Jacey’s commitment to rugby by making
the Ontario Provincial U-17 team. This player shocks Caledon's league competition at the U-19
level by leading the junior scoring stats. Jacey's future within Caledon rugby will provide a key
role for sustaining the clubs success.” Jacey will be playing in the National Games--along with the
Canadian teams and other Ontario teams--in Hamilton August 12th-15th—community support
is encouraged.

Cavalier Women Fighting Strong

"This is the most proud I have ever been of the Cavaliers." Coach Todd Russell stated after watching
the senior girls battle it out in the rain at the Mayfield rugby pitch this past Thursday July 15th. Any
spectator would have agreed, the Cavaliers had never played so well together. After losing their last
game against the Toronto Nomads 63-0, both teams entered the game expecting a similar outcome.
At the half, the Nomads-who are the #1 ranked team in the league-were only up 19-5. All of the players
on the field struggled against the downpour of rain, the slippery ball and the poor lighting conditions.
Although the score ended with another Nomad win, the Cavaliers held them to a 34-10 victory-a huge
difference in score compared to the last match up between the two teams. Trys were scored by
eight-man Jacey Murphy and flanker Shawna Gillen. Jacey, along with the rest of the girls on the junior
team had also played the night before in Brampton against the Under 19 squad. Every player on the
Caledon team left the pitch full of energy and excitement-something not normally expressed by the
losing team. "This was the first time the girls actually played like a team. Every single person on the
field gave it their all and showed me that they are not ready to throw in the towel. I am so pleased."
The Cavalier's next games have the juniors playing Wednesday July 21st at Humberview Highschool
in Bolton, and the seniors travelling to Belleville Saturday July 24th. Good luck to both teams!

Wednesday July 14th
Continued Success of Caledon Rugby

Congratulations goes out to the Caledon Cavaliers Under 19 Women’s team for their second win of
the season, leaving them 2-0. The girls played this past Wednesday night, July 7th, in the poring
rain against the Aurora Barbs at The Humberview School. The final score was 17-12, with try’s scored
by Kate Chiswell, Mel Caldwell, and Jacey Murphy. Mel Caldwell scored a 2-point conversion kick as well.
Player of the game went to 15 year old Jacey Murphy, who also is congratulated for making the Under 17
Ontario squad. Coaches Todd Russell and John Picard are extremely pleased and excited about the Under
19 team that the Cavaliers have pulled together. “The talent that these girls have at such a young age
is very encouraging. The more experienced players bring nothing but support to the less experienced
girls on the field. All together, this team is coming together very well.” The U19 team’s next game is
Wednesday, July 14th in Brampton, and the Cavaliers Senior team plays next Thursday, July 15th at
Mayfield Secondary School.

Rugby Season going strong for Caledon Cavaliers

Experience was the key success for the under 19 Caledon Cavaliers first junior game of 2004. With
nine players returning from previous years, the team saw veteran's Andrea DeFrancesco, Kate
Chiswell, Allison Dresser and Jocelyn Dresser score points to help Caledon beat Markham 20-12.
Junior director Jenna Gillespie is very excited about the team's strengths and believes this team
has the recipe to deliver a championship. Club president Sara Mezzone is expecting nothing
unusla from this team other then complete success. Coach Todd Russell is pleased to see the junior
program growing which includes additional coaching help from John Picard, a teacher from Robert
F. Hall. Traditionally schools that feed the program are Robert F. Hall, Humberview Secondary and
Banting Secondary. The Caledon Cavaliers are extremely proud to welcome their first Mayfield
Mavericks student Nicole Struthers. "This input to our roster is huge; Nicole is an excellent player
that brings a strong rugby history with her," coach Todd Russell stated. Secondly the Cavaliers also
welcome Kaila Myers, the first player from Country Day School in King City. "This player came to
our club via a referral from her high school coach and also brings an enhanced talent for the sport
of rugby." For her second season, under 19 captain Charlene Reidler not only plays in the junior
rugby program, but also is a key player within the senior squad. This year Reidler made the senior
all-star team. Noted Coach Todd Russell, "Charlene's talent grows every game--so much that player
selectors from Trent University have already approached her for enrollment next year." Player
of the match went to Melissa Caldwell, who at the fly half position, directed key offensive plays
towards the domination of Markham. Next game is at Humberview school July 7th, at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday June 12th
Cavaliers buried by Bulldogs

The Caledon Cavalier's Women's Rugby Football Club played their first home game this past Saturday,
June 5th, against the travelling Belleville Bulldgos. Although the weather was in theri favour, the
game wasn't, as the Cavaliers found themselves at a 32-0 loss. All of the girls played their hardest,
but missing a great number of key players didn't help in their struggle to break the shutout lead.
Coaches Todd Russell and Jorge Pettigrew feel the girls had a very positive game despite the loss and
are pleased with the effort the team continues to exert. Player of the game went to Charlene Reidler,
a leading power in the forward pack. The Cavaliers' next game is today, Saturday June 12th at
Humberview School against the Ajax Wanderers. Come support the CAvalier Women as they aim to
break the recent losing streak; kickoff is at noon.

Cavalier Ladies beat Maruaders

The Caledon Cavaliers Rugby women had another busy day this past Saturday May 29th. The senior
team met at 8 a.m. to travel two and a half hours to Norwood to play against the very experienced
Peterborough Pagans. The girls held the Pagans to an 8-0 advantage for the first 40 mintues, but lost
it in the second half to a score of 33-0. The day was barely over as the team had to rush back to
Bolton to greet a travelling junior team from Balitmore, Maryland, for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff exhibition
game. The Westminster Maurauders brought 18 players, four coaches and three parents all the way
to Humberview to challenge the under 19 Cavaliers, some of which had already played an 80 minute
game that morning. The Caledon girls came back from a 12-0 deficit to win 25-17 in the second half.
Player of the game went to scrum half Ashley Reid for her strength and determination out on the field.
After the game, both teams headed back to the Cavalier's official pub sponsor, the Toby Jug for some
hospitatliy, food, drinks, and of course, rugby songs. A special thanks goes out to Elaine Wiltshire for
arranging the day as well as Cavalier coach Todd Russell for refereeing. Congratulations to both the
Cavaliers and the Mauraders for proving that rugby really is the greatest sport both on and off the field.
